The British publication produced its own crossword puzzle known as a “cryptic crossword” on February 1922 in Pearson’s Magazine. It has a very unique style and measured to be more difficult than the American style.

Constructors of the crossword puzzles are considered to be gifted and have amazing intellectual skills. They are also known as “cruciverbalists.”  Being a cruciverbalist requires wide vocabulary, ability to produce suitable clues and ability to measure a puzzle from easy to a difficult level.  These constructors can also do an experiment with other word games such as anagrams, jumbles, sudoku and more.  Some of the famous cruciverbalists nowadays are Merl Reagle, Rex Parker, Elizabeth Gorski, Patrick Berry and Patrick Blindauer.

Crossword puzzles are useful to exercise the brain that pushes it to work harder.  It strengthens the ability of one’s mind to stimulate, process, enhanced and explore additional information. This game is the best cognitive workout for everyone. It involves concentration and full attention. It also develops more patience through trial and error until someone finally finished the challenge.  Working on puzzles develops your brain to learn new facts and expand your vocabulary. Some studies have shown that regularly solving a crossword puzzle can help reduce mental disabilities and improves memory.

The puzzles are a traditional part of newspapers. Some of the newspapers that produce Sunday Crosswords are USA Today Crossword, The New York Times, The Washington Post, The Onion, The Los Angeles Times Crossword and The Wall Street Journal. The Los Angeles Times and Washington Post doesn’t issue their own crossword on Sundays. Instead, they publish Merl Reagle’s Sunday Crosswords. Reagle is known for his crossword puzzles every Sunday with humorous themes. The New York Times’ Sunday crosswords are famously known as the hardest and very challenging, yet it is solved by millions of people around US. The harder the puzzle, the more satisfying and fulfilling as someone finished the challenge.  It gives a sense of success that can’t be replaced upon completion. There are also available crossword puzzles online that can be printed immediately and practically are free.

Solving crossword puzzles as part of your Sunday routine to sharpen your cognitive skills will surely make your day. It gives fun and challenges your mental ability. The more challenging it is, the better. Of course, this kind of game is very entertaining and can be solved anywhere. In addition, it is also useful to escape from boredom and depression.
